Yozin

A year or two ago, I was looking for a name for a project. After scanning through available short dot-com domain names, I came across yozin.com.

The word “yozin” is nice because it’s short, easy to pronounce, and doesn’t mean anything, so there’s no cultural baggage. It’s also not trademarked (as far as I could tell). A Google search for “yozin” returned this video as the first result:

I found that video cute and comical, but perplexing. Are they singing something embarassing?

Last week I did some more digging and found that the above video is a copy of this video (which has English subtitles):

That video has the name “Jozin from the bog - Jozin z bazin (English subtitles)” and has way more views than “Yozin”. Apparently “Yozin” is a misspelling of “Jozin”? I dug deeper and found that there’s a Wikipedia article aboutJožin z bažin”: apparently it’s a popular Czech song about a monster named Jožin who lives in a bog.

Moreover, Jožin is apparently the Czech equivalent of “Joey” or “Joseph”. Mystery solved!
